This band was started in Grahamstown in October 1999 by ex-Directorate of Arts & Culture official, Gerry Accom, who not only identified a need for the brand of music performed by the band, but also attempted to expose the latent potential of the talented individuals who made up the group.
The name of the band Coysan had already proven somewhat controversial. In pronunciation, the name sounds like Khoisan and the band members were extremely proud of their heritage, which, like the brand of music they perform, had evolved over the years to merit recognition in our new democracy.
They performed what is popularly known as “Langarm” music. It is a brand of music performed throughout the country at formal dance functions of coloured people and, in our opinion, forms an integral part of what could be defined as our culture.
We were hoping not only to continue this tradition through performance, but also to document the “Greats” who have paved the way for posterity.
The band was constituted of five highly talented musicians from various walks of life.
